Tambayan Presentation: Bryan Pangilinan, composer and executive producer of Larry the Musical  

We recently held a Zoom presentation which we highlighted Bryan Pangilinan, a San Francisco composer and executive producer of Larry the Musical. Bryan was honored to join Brava Theater as an Artist in Residence to co-compose the first musical about Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong with Gayle Romasanta, fusing his influences in folk, opera, classical, and musical theater styles. The musical is based on “Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong” by Dr. Dawn Mabalon and Gayle Romasanta. Larry the Musical premiered on March 16, 2024, for one month at the Brava Theatre in San Francisco.

Tambayan means "a place for hanging out" in Tagalog. Tambayan is a space where UCSF staff, faculty learners of Filipino descent and allies can gather to socialize, network, and support each other.

May was chosen as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. (Source: Asian American Commission)
